Hire a Magician in Perth
Everything worth knowing before you book: what a booking involves, the kinds of magic on offer, and how an enquiry reaches a member of Perth's magic club.
The West Australian Society of Magicians has met in Perth since 1922, and its members include working professionals who perform at parties, weddings, corporate functions and schools across Western Australia. At the moment 30 of them are listed on Find a Magician, where you can search by speciality and area, watch a clip where one is linked, and send an enquiry.
What a booking involves
- Decide the shape of the event. The date, the start time, where it is, how many guests there will be and roughly how old they are, and how long you would like the magic to run. A magician cannot say what will work without these.
- Choose the kind of act. A guest list that stands and mingles suits a different performer from a seated room with a stage (see the kinds of act below).
- Look at who is available. Read the profiles on Find a Magician. Several link a video clip or the performer's own website.
- Send an enquiry. Press Enquire on the profile you like and tell the committee about the event. Include the details from step one so the magician can reply with something useful.
- Agree the details with the performer. The magician replies to you directly. Their fee, what is included, travel, set-up needs and any deposit are agreed between the two of you.
- On the day. Tell the magician where to park and load in, and who to find when they arrive. A performer who has a clear spot, decent lighting and an audience that knows when to expect them does their best work.
Kinds of act
Members of the Society list one or more of these specialities. Each speciality that has a listed magician has a page of its own.
Close-up and roving or strolling magic
The magician moves among your guests and performs a few feet away, often with cards, coins and everyday objects. It suits cocktail hours, weddings between the ceremony and the meal, and any event where people are standing and talking. It needs no stage and no sound system.
Stage magic and illusions
A show for a seated audience, from a few minutes to a full set. Larger illusions need a stage, space and often a way of getting equipment into the room, so talk about the venue early.
Mentalism
Mind-reading and prediction, performed close-up or on stage. A good fit for corporate events and adult audiences who like to be puzzled rather than shown the same trick twice.
Comedy magic and cabaret
Magic with the laughs built in, for dinners, fundraisers and entertainment nights.
Kids' parties and school shows
Shows pitched at children. Tell the magician the ages and how many children are coming, because a show for four-year-olds is not a show for ten-year-olds.
Corporate events and keynote speaking
Some members perform at corporate functions, or speak at conferences with magic as part of the message. Mention the audience, the venue and any brand or message you want the performer to bear in mind.

How enquiries work at WASM
When you press Enquire, your message goes to the WASM committee, who pass it on to the magician you named. The magician then replies to you directly. If you send a general enquiry instead of naming someone, the committee will connect you with a member whose speciality and area fit.
The committee are volunteers and the magician has to be free on your date, so a reply can take a few days. Nobody here promises a response time. If you have heard nothing after that, email info@wasm.com.au.
You should get an automatic note confirming that your enquiry arrived. That note is not a booking: a booking exists only once you and the performer have agreed it between you.
What WASM is, and is not
WASM is a club, not an agency. It is an incorporated association of magicians, founded in Perth on 6 February 1922, that meets monthly and keeps its members in touch with people looking for a performer.
The performers are independent. They are members of the Society, not its employees. Each agrees their own fee, terms and conditions with you.
WASM does not set or promise prices. This page quotes none, and the Society does not guarantee any performer's fee, availability or insurance.
What the Society does do is pass your enquiry to a member who has chosen to be listed. Maintaining the Magician's Code of Ethics is one of the Society's stated objectives. The profiles on Find a Magician are written by the members themselves.
Areas
Magicians who have said they work in these suburbs: Fremantle. Members also list wider areas, such as Perth Metro, North of the River and South of the River; use the Area filter on Find a Magician.
Questions people ask before booking
How do I hire a magician in Perth through WASM?
Search the Find a Magician page by speciality and area, open the profiles that suit your event, and press Enquire on the magician you would like. Your enquiry goes to the WASM committee, who pass it on, and the magician replies to you directly to talk through the details.
Does WASM set prices or take a booking fee?
WASM is a club, not an agency. It does not set, quote or guarantee anyone's fee. Each magician is independent and agrees their price and terms directly with you.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as you have a date. Weekends, December and wedding season are the busiest times for any performer, and a magician who is free on the day cannot be assumed. Tell them the date, the venue and the kind of event in your first message.
What should I tell the magician when I enquire?
The date and start time, where it is, what kind of event it is, roughly how many guests and their ages, how long you would like the magic to run, and whether it is indoors or out. A line about the space (a stage, a sound system, tables to walk between) helps them tell you what will work.
Can I see a magician perform before I book?
Many profiles link a video clip or the magician's own website. Watch those, and ask the magician for anything further when they reply.
Do WASM magicians have public liability insurance?
Ask the magician directly when you enquire. Some venues, councils and corporate clients want a certificate of currency, and WASM does not hold or check one on a performer's behalf.
What if I do not hear back?
The committee are volunteers and the magician has to be free on your date, so a reply can take a few days. If you have heard nothing after that, email info@wasm.com.au and the committee will chase it up.
