Who can join the West Australian Society of Magicians?

Anyone aged 16 or over with a genuine interest in the art of magic, amateur or professional, can apply as an Ordinary Member with full voting rights. Ages 12 to 15 are welcome as Associate Members when accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult at all times; Associate Members attend everything but do not vote. Applicants under 12 are considered only at the committee's discretion.

Do I need to be a good magician to join?

No. The membership spans every level of skill, from people who have just learned their first false shuffle to working professionals. The audition is three tricks performed for the members and is friendly by design.

Can I attend a WASM meeting before joining?

Yes, and you are expected to — the first step of joining is attending three meetings as a guest. Regular monthly meetings are closed to the public: they are for club members and vetted guests, so contact the committee first and they will arrange your visit. There is no cost and no pressure to perform. Public open meetings, held once a quarter, are open to anyone without arrangement. Meetings are the second Tuesday of every month, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, at the Belgian Beer Café in the Perth CBD.

Where and when does WASM meet?

The second Tuesday of every month, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, at the Belgian Beer Cafe, Le Roi Function Space, corner of King Street and Murray Street, Perth WA 6000. Public open meetings, which anyone may attend, are held once a quarter; regular monthly meetings are for members and vetted guests.

How old is the West Australian Society of Magicians?

WASM held its first meeting on 6 February 1922 and has met continuously ever since, through depressions, a world war and a pandemic. It is one of the oldest continuously operating magic clubs in the world.

Can I hire a magician through WASM?

Yes. The Find a Magician page lists WASM members available for bookings across Perth for parties, weddings and corporate events, searchable by specialty and area, with an enquiry going straight to the magician through the committee.

Who Can Apply

Ordinary Member

Associate (Youth) Member

Perform three magic tricks for the members. It's a very friendly audition — nobody's trying to catch you out.

Club Vote

Members vote on whether to accept your application.

Take the Oath

If accepted, you'll be asked to take a formal oath to protect our magical secrets — a tradition unbroken since 1922.

Settle Your Fees

A once-only joining fee, plus the annual membership fee to WASM.

Begin Participating
