For Aspiring Magicians
Learn Magic in Perth
The West Australian Society of Magicians has been passing the craft on in Perth since 1922. Its members range from people who have just learned their first false shuffle to working professionals.
How members learn at WASM
- Monthly meetings. Meetings are held second Tuesday monthly, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, at the Le Roi Function Room, Belgian Beer Café (Cnr King St & Murray St, Perth WA 6000).
- Performing for magicians. Meetings include member performances, so you get a real audience of fellow magicians.
- Jam sessions and feedback. Informal practice, and feedback sessions for those developing new material.
- Workshops and lectures. Workshops at meetings, and occasional meetings with lecturers and visiting magicians from interstate or overseas. See upcoming events.
- A reference library. One of the Society's objectives, set out in its constitution, is to maintain a reference library of works on the Art of Magic.
- The Western Wand. Members receive the Society's newsletter.
How to start
- Get in touch. Regular monthly meetings are for members and vetted guests, so contact the committee before your first visit and they will arrange it.
- Come as a guest. Joining starts with attending three meetings as a guest, so you can see whether WASM is the right fit. Public open meetings are open to anyone.
- Apply to join. Two members nominate you, you perform three tricks for the members (a friendly audition), the members vote, and new members take an oath to protect magical secrets. The full process.
Who can join
Anyone aged 16 or over with a genuine interest in the Art of Magic, amateur or professional. Ages 12 to 15 can join as Associate Members with a parent, guardian or responsible adult; see Young Magicians & Parents.
