Questions and answers
When and where does the West Australian Society of Magicians meet?
Second Tuesday monthly, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, at the Le Roi Function Room, Belgian Beer Café (Cnr King St & Murray St, Perth WA 6000). Open meetings, which anyone may attend, alternate with closed meetings for members and vetted guests.
Can I come to a meeting as a guest?
Yes, and you are expected to: the first step of joining is attending three meetings as a guest. Regular monthly meetings are closed to the public, so contact the committee first and they will arrange your visit. There is no cost and no pressure to perform. Open meetings are open to anyone without arrangement. Meetings are second Tuesday monthly, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, at the Le Roi Function Room, Belgian Beer Café, in the Perth CBD.
How do I join the Society?
Start with the Register your interest form on the Join page and a committee member will be in touch. The steps are: attend three meetings as a guest, secure two nominations from members, perform three tricks for the members as a friendly audition, the members vote, you take the oath to protect the Society's secrets, and you pay the annual membership fee.
Who can join?
Anyone aged 16 or over with a genuine interest in the art of magic, amateur or professional, can apply as an Ordinary Member with full voting rights. Ages 12 to 15 are welcome as Associate Members when accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult at all times; Associate Members do not vote. Applicants under 12 are considered only at the committee's discretion. You do not need to be a good magician: members range from beginners to working professionals.
Do WASM magicians perform at events?
Yes: members who choose to be listed are available for bookings. The Find a Magician page lists WASM members available across Perth for parties, weddings and corporate events, searchable by speciality and area, and an enquiry goes to the magician through the committee. WASM is a club, not an agency: it does not set, quote or guarantee anyone's fee, and each magician agrees their price and terms with you directly.
Who is the oldest magic club in Perth?
The West Australian Society of Magicians has been Perth's magic club since its first meeting on 6 February 1922, and it has met continuously ever since, through depressions, a world war and a pandemic. It is one of the oldest continuously operating magic clubs in the world.
